Although there is some confusion as to which level the skull came from, it has been direct-dated by AMS at 31,700 BP. The skull most closely represents prehistoric dogs, rather than wolves. The study examining the Goyet cave also identified what appears to be prehistoric dogs at Chauvet Cave (~26,000 bp) in France and Mezhirich in the Ukraine (ca 15,000 years BP), among others. In 2012, the same scholars (Germonprà © and colleagues 2012) reported on collections from the Gravettian Predmostà ­ cave in the Czech Republic, which contained two more EP dogs dated between 24,000-27,000 BP. One EP dog reported in 2011 (Ovodov and colleagues) was from Razboinichya Cave, or Bandits Cave, in the Altai mountains of Siberia. This site has problematic dates: the same excavation layer returned radiocarbon dates ranging between 15,000-50,000 years. The skull itself has elements of both wolf and dog, and, say scholars, similarities to Goyet, but its dating too is problematic, with AMS dating no more precise than older than 20,000 years. Dog Genome In 2013, the complete dog genome was reported (Thalmann et al.), using complete and partial mitochondrial genomes from 18 prehistoric canids and 20 modern wolves from Eurasia and the Americas. Ancient mtDNA examples included the EP dogs of Goyet, Bonn-Oberkassel and Razboinichya Cave, as well as more recently dated sites of Cerro Lutz in Argentina, and the Koster site in the United States. Results from the ancient mtDNA were then compared to genome sequences from 49 modern wolves, 80 dogs from around the world, and four coyotes. Modern examples of dogs included many breeds, including Dingo, Basenji, and some recently published Chinese indigenous dogs. Results from the genome study support the notion that all modern dogs derive from wolves of European origin, and that that event occurred sometime between 18,800 and 32,100 years ago. Investigating Light and Photosynthesis Essay Photosynthesis is the process where a plant converts sunlight into glucose. Glucose is the food for the plant, thus plants create there own food. Plants do this by a chemical reaction. Plants use the sunlight, carbon dioxide and water; plants use a chemical named chlorophyll in photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is used to convert the sunlight into glucose. There are two bi-products of this reaction; they are glucose, which is useful to the plant as it is what the plant lives off, and oxygen, which is not useful to the plant as a result of this it is released into the atmosphere. The word equation of photosynthesis is: Carbon-dioxide + water >sunlight> glucose + oxygen 6CO2 + H2O >sunlight> C6H12O6 + 6O2 From the equation an easy way to measure the rate of photosynthesis is to count the individual oxygen bubbles given off per unit of time e.g. bubbles per minute. Apparatus The apparatus that was used for this experiment was: beaker, boiling tube, pond weed, lamp, water, meter ruler, stop clock scissors. Prediction I predict that the closer the lamp to the boiling tube containing the pond weed and water the faster the rate of photosynthesis, the more bubbles will come from the weed and faster or larger. The plant in the first and second minute may be in a state of warming up therefore the first and second minute s results may be discarded these results are obtrusive. Method Firstly the pond weed has to be prepared for the investigation. To do this the bottom three to four rows of leaves must be removed using scissors. An incision must then be made cutting diagonally at a 45? angle to allow the bubbles to flow more freely from the stem of the plant. The pond weed must be around seven centimeters in length and should also be placed fully submerged in the boiling tube wit the end with the incision in at the top of the boiling tube. The boiling tube should then be submerged in water inside the beaker, this is done in order to make the experiment fair as it makes sure that the outside temperature cannot affect the results, and the radiated heat from the lamp may heat the water thus making the experiment unfair. The next thing that needs to be done is the meter ruler needs to be placed next to the beaker and intervals of five centimeters are marked on. The lamp is then placed at the first five centimeters from the beaker the lamp is then switched on and pointing toward the beaker. The stop clock is started for a minute then stopped, during this minute the amount of bubbles that come out of the stem of the plant are counted and recorded in a results table. After the minute is over the lamp is moved to the next five centimeter mark, it should be the ten cm mark, the stop watch is started for a minute then stopped, and again the bubbles are counted and recorded for that minute. This cycle continues until the lamp reaches the sixth mark. Racism in the novel is strictly placed on African Americans, not on whites.   Bertha was out to impress and embody everything she believed would make her feel either more white or more like a white person.   It was this sentiment, this denial of the self which ultimately leads to Bertha’s insanity, although at the close of the novel it is Bertha’s jump which ultimately frees her such pre-conceptions made about her by both her husband’s bigotry and society’s rueful judgement.   Although a lot can be said about gender issues in the book but the keystone subject is color conscious.   By striving to retard her heritage in order to better cope with the situations arising with her husband, especially when they move to England, Bertha, is hoping to find many things: love, a home, acceptance, confidence, and especially happiness.   It is happiness which becomes a pivotal element in Bertha’s character.   If any part of her life isn’t up to par with her idea of any of these things, then she blames it on her heritage, or finds an extreme difference between her and her husband because of her cultural background, just as she states that her husband is not worried about the servants only because he is not Creole.   In a way, Bertha is also creating many of the differences separating herself and Rochester.   Although many of these difference, and most important of them is their concepts for servants, divide them, they are also the divided by their preconceptions of each other through their society.   She is not entirely wrong in her conjecture of other’s treatment towards her being of a different heritage. However much Rochester held racist thoughts about the blacks, about them being lazy, he does trust them to an extent and believes they would never harm him.   It is this trust which ultimately injures Bertha’s son Pierre.   When the servants revolt and Rochester opens the door to the glacis he is meet with his ignorance for everything that Bertha feared has come true.   Bertha then rushes to her son’s room where her trusted servant Myra has joined the maddening crowd outside and who have started to burn down the house.   It seems that although Rochester is biased against the blacks, calling them lazy, Bertha is the one who believes in the malicious nature, and whose belief in their hatred of her and her position in society have spurned them to this present situation. In this riot scene Rhys reveals many strongly held positions of the characters.   Rochester is the character who holds prejudices against the blacks of the West Indies.   Not only does Rochester hold these biased beliefs but he also has a strong misconception of the Creoles.   The servants in the Caribbean are the ones who hold the power, while Rochester is used to the owner of the land and houses to hold power, as is true for his native England, his misconstrued beliefs lead him to endanger his family.   Rochester believes that since he is white and from England no harm may come to him by the backwards, voodoo practicing servants.   The issue of control becomes an underlying theme behind the prejudices of Wide Sargasso Sea. Since control becomes a central part of the novel, the effect of control and the lack or holding of it for each character needs to be examined.   It is Rochester’s character who develops an over-concentration with the concept of control.   Rochester cannot fathom how Bertha can feel that she has no control over her servants, the people whose job it is to answer her desires and needs.   Although part of this is a culture divide it is also a gender divide.   While Rochester is empowered with giving orders, as is portrayed later on in Rhys’ work when the couple return to Rochester’s estate, there is no denying that Bertha is subject to Rochester’s poor interpretations of her actions, feelings, and culture.   Bertha feels threatened by her servants, even though she is ‘supposed’ to be lord over them.   One climactic moment of this reversal of character for Bertha however occurs when she meets Jane, which will be discussed later in the essay. In order to justify herself, her move to England and to increase her happiness, Bertha places her self worth on whether or not Rochester loves her.   In the parts of the novel when she and Rochester are together, Bertha speaks about joy more frequently.   Her attraction to him however is based primarily on his skin color and social position.   Rochester’s attraction to her is based primarily on avarice and greed, not love but economic convenience.   The cycle of Bertha’s wanting acceptance from Rochester fuels her descent into madness, and damages her emotionally and physically.   Rochester seems to sweetly chastise her about her belief structure, which only instigates her isolation.   The differing beliefs towards the servants, and toward issues of power are a symbol of their failed compromise in love, and their self-destruction of each other. At Thornfield, these issues of control form into issues of identity for both Rochester and Bertha.   Their identity seems to rest upon their control over themselves.   Since Bertha is Jane’s daughter (metaphorically as presented by Bronte and Rhys), it would make her (Bertha) a double nonentity.   Bertha is the offspring of an orphan (someone with no ties and someone feeling the absence of a family) and a madwoman.   Bertha is kept locked away in that room, locked inside of Jane and physically locked away in the attic at Thornfield.   At Gateshead, Lowood, and   Thornfield Jane struggles with her rebellion, hunger, and rage while still trying to find her identity.   Each of these devices is thought unfeminine and beastly, and perceived as having a lack of control over oneself which also branches into not having control over one’s surroundings as was demonstrated by Bertha and Rochester back at Coulibri, so to appease the class hierarchy in society Jane mus t not admit that these feelings even exist.   Bertha, on the other hand, embraces these characteristics, and finally is exhibiting a type of control at least over her identity.   While Jane struggles with the burdens of being upright, Bertha revels in her twisted feminine pulchritude version of madness.   It seems that once Bertha embraces this madness, she finally has control over herself, but in the end she still fails to have control over her surroundings as Rochester still does not love her, and her servants may fear her, but they do not obey her. Bertha’s madness takes the form of nonverbal communication, which again shows a lack of control over her surroundings.   She does not speak but makes guttural noises and cackles.   Since Bertha refuses to speak, it can be assumed that she is using her silence as a form of protest and resistance.   Bertha’s reason for protest for example, is that Rochester stole her away from her family, and then imprisoned her in Thornfield. The term madness is an open category used by physicians in Victorian times as an all-encompassing term for a feminine malady.   Madness then is a term imposed upon women who do not adhere to or conform to the role of 19th century female. Through the hegira of the novel it was a curious observation to see Bertha’s character remain constant, monotonous: From Coulibri, to England.   This calls to question whether or not it should be said that Bertha is failing in trying to find a home.   This factored in with love, happiness, and confidence are the cul-de-sac she suffers in each place.   With the close of the novel, Bertha’s change is cataclysmic and expecting for her mother’s predisposing madness is unexpected, but completely in accord with her lack of control, and her culture and feeling of isolation. Since Rochester has physically locked Bertha away, Jane realizes that he would never accept her true personality, or her hint of madness as it has so been termed.   Bertha’s death is a questionable suicide.   It may be viewed as an action for liberations not only for Bertha but for Jane.   It may also be viewed as Bertha’s final act against the oppressive hand of Rochester.   In either case, it is clear that Bertha’s jump is ambiguous and not, as other critiques may see, an act or altruism for the sake of Jane. In order to better understand class struggle and identity through culture a closer look at Bertha is needed.   Bertha is born in the red-room, and in a sense, never leaves it until the final plunge on the rocks which ends her physical appearance in the novel. When the reader is first introduced into the red-room, Jane describes it as â€Å"This room was chill, because it seldom had a fire† (Bronte 21), so after Bertha’s birth, the room embodies a feminine mystique, a sense of womanhood as it were, which symbolizes Jane’s fury about the surroundings she is incapable of changing.   Bertha, as has been established, as Jane’s doppleganger is in a sense the â€Å"looking glass† (21) of Jane; suffice it to say that while Jane keeps a calm head Bertha is a pyromaniac.   In the red-room the reader gets the first glimpse of Bertha, â€Å"the strange little figure there gazing at me, with a white face and arms specking the gloom, and glittering eyesâ⠂¬  (21). This scene signifies the breaking off of Jane’s wild side.   The side which society cannot control.   The description Jane gives of the ‘looking glass’ figure will parallel other descriptions of Bertha later in the novel; such as the torn veil scene where Jane sees Bertha through the oblong dark glass.   This is a sort of Alice Through the Looking Glass transcendence; where everything about Jane is distorted in reference to Bertha through the looking glass of the Victorian Era. The red-room signifies Jane’s womb, and it will be about eight years later when Jane comes in contact with it again. Bertha then becomes doubly trapped, one for Jane’s womb (red-room) and then by Rochester at Thornfield. Since Jane is an orphan and Bertha is Jane’s phantom image, this type of relationship would put Bertha in a situation where she develops a double stigma. Not only is she orphaned by her orphaned mother, but she is emotionally abandoned by her husband. This double non-entity status marks the nascent Bertha’s protest. Bertha cannot expect to be understood by the surrounding dyads so she forms a protest by using nonverbal communication: â€Å"nineteenth century hysteric was in fact enacting a protest against the traditional female role† (Caminero-Santangelo 3).   This establishment for Bertha allows her to still be in the mind of Rochester, maybe not as a person, but as a threat to his plans of marrying Jane. The communication Bertha uses consists mainly of grunting, using guttural noises and laughing. The events instigated by Bertha at Thornfield take place during a full moon. In this case, her laughing is associated with lunacy.   However, Bertha’s laughter may also be construed as a form of anger or protest.   It was more common for a Victorian woman to swoon, faint, or cry rather than to laugh. With laughing Bertha seems to be saying that since no one wants to deal with her, she will at least make sure that people can hear her. Bertha’s madness has now become a form of resistance. Since society will have nothing to do with her, she will embrace the pariah status she has acquired.   Similarly, Jane has had to do this. Jane has always been cast out of social functions (at Gateshead especially), she is ever kept from a warm fire, a kind home, for even at Lowood she was too small to sit by the fire which was being blocked by the robust bodies of Bertha look-a-likes. Since society has a low tolerance for Jane’s outspokenness, most of how Jane would like to act is pawned off on her orphaned alter-ego, Bertha.   Bertha’s actions mirror Jane’s desires. So it may be designed that Bertha is still working inside the ‘looking glass’, inside the red-room and more especially inside of Jane.   Jane is bound to the laws of etiquette and so is not allowed to act how she feels.   She depends on Bertha’s hysterics to let her true feelings be known.   Nevertheless, it i s disturbingly clear from recurrent images in the novel that Bertha not only acts for Jane, she also acts like Jane.   The imprisoned Bertha, running â€Å"backwards and forwards† on all fours in the attic, for instance, recalls not only Jane the governess, whose only relief from mental pain was to pace â€Å"backwards and forwards† in the third story, but also that â€Å"bad animal† who was ten-ear-old Jane, imprisoned in the red-room, howling and mad. Bertha’s â€Å"goblin appearance† â€Å"half dream, half reality, â€Å" says Rochester- recalls the lover’s epithets for Jane: â€Å"malicious elf, â€Å" †sprite,† â€Å"changeling,† as well as his playful accusation that she had magically downed his horse at their first meeting† (Gilbert, Gubar 361).   Rochester’s recollection may very well be that of his and Bertha’s, for especially in marriage Bertha has proven to have â€Å"downed his hor se† as it were.   It is accurately depicted that Jane and Bertha share similar actions, mannerisms, feelings, and decisions.   More importantly they share a bond of societal bastardization, which brings about Ussher’s view of feminism and hysterics, â€Å"Recent feminist work on hysteria, observing that strong and outspoken women were the ones diagnosed and treated within this oppressive regime lends support to the case that diagnosis and treatment were used as methods of social control and that symptoms were in reality an form of protest† (Ussher 76). The novel’s themes rely upon the setting of Jamaica and then the novel’s second narration by Rochester in England.   The comparison of the two settings aid in the reader’s understanding of the class struggle of both characters.   Whites who are born in England share a higher place in society than whites who are Creoles (Creole is a descendent of Europeans who began to inhabit the West Indies one or two generations back).   The servants who play in important part in the development of Rochester and Bertha’s relationship share an equal importance in the novel as their identities as ex-slaves fuel the division of class in the novel. It is this integration of many cultures which fuels the bad blood between the characters and often times results in the misunderstanding between Bertha and Rochester.   In fact, it is only Antoinette (Bertha) and her mother who do not present racist views in the novel.   There is a certain respect Bertha has for her servants, hence her trust in them to watch her son (although this trust may also be a type of fear of the servants).   This aids in Bertha’s confusion of the servant’s role when she moves to England with Rochester.   In this move it is paramount to understand that Bertha’s background, and interaction with servants was very different in the West Indies than in England.   The control she cannot seem to must in her home reveals itself to her in England, and although her character goes mad by society’s standards, she final enacts control of her own identity and actions by finally burning down Rochester’s house, and her relationship with him, and making   a free will choice of her own by jumping off the roof.

White Privilege Essay Example for Free

White Privilege Essay ?In essence, it’s a simple concept: white privilege refers to the both minor and significant advantages that white people have in today’s American society. To be honest reading this article was a huge eye opener for me. I still struggle with both believing that white privilege exists and figuring out how to get rid of it. I have never felt that I was privileged to be white, however, I suppose that could be because as McIntosh states â€Å"whites are carefully taught not to recognize white privilege† After reading McIntosh’s list of the daily effects of white privilege I now understand these privileges and can put myself into the shoes of other non-white individuals to see how they would perceive me as a privileged white woman. I have never thought of myself as being privileged, or better in any way that those that I come in contact with. The concept of white privilege does not deny my individual hardships that I’ve dealt with throughout life. Hardships can be circumstantial, they can be something we are born with, or even something that we cause on our own. These circumstances are for the most part out of our control. Some hardships are related to race, and those who haven’t experienced those particular race-related hardships, I now suppose are white. In most ways conferred dominance and the fact that whites have been labeled as superior in any way is the exact opposite of the way I feel about myself, and the way I view others in my daily life. After reading McIntosh’s article, White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack, I suppose that I do see some advantages that I may have just always taken for granted. The one that may seem silly, but I’ve always wondered about is: why do they only make white â€Å"flesh† colored band aids? I t seems like a no brainer to me to make them in all flesh tones. In my school community which consists of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students I struggle to pick out white privileges. I do not feel that any of our teaching staff or administrators see themselves as dominant over any other race or culture within our school community. I suppose that the fact that our school principal, secretary, and most teachers are white would portray dominance within our race. The majority of our staff speak English, however we do have several bilingual teachers and staff members. In the classroom environment, other than our bilingual classrooms the population of white students is greater than that of any other race. As a teacher I am committed to equality and treating all of my students fairly and as equals in our classroom community. I do not think that 7 and 8 year old white students see themselves as dominant of more important than any other classmate. I can, however see how a Black, Hispanic, or students of other cultural background would feel at times to be the minority. I think that this feeling, however is taught to them at home, or somewhat of a learned feeling of identity. In my school community we do our best to incorporate other cultural history into our curriculum by designing lessons that educate our students about important people in our history from a variety of cultures. The majority of our schools population is comprised of white and Hispanic students. I think that as a whole we could do a better job at integrating more of the Hispanic culture into our school’s curriculum. After reading this article I now find myself more aware of the white privilege that I do hold, and am definitely going to work toward building my daily classroom routines and lessons to include a wider variety of cultures and discuss current events around the globe that my students can relate to.

Do you believe that Macbeth is a complete villain Essay

Macbeth is a play, which was written by William Shakespeare, and first published in 1623 (during the reign of King James I of England). Macbeth was a hero and also a loyal subject and friend of the King, Duncan. He gave no quarter on the battlefield, due to his brutal courage, e.g. Macbeth â€Å"unseamed† a Norwegian â€Å"from the nave to the chaps† and â€Å"fixed his head† onto the Scottish battlements, during the battle at the beginning of the play. This proved his patriotism for his country, and his respect for the King. By fighting for his country, Scotland, he achieved in return the respect that he deserved from the King. Macbeth was plagued with conflicting qualities; for example, one was the humane and courteous way he treated his wife, i.e. Macbeth referred to his wife (in his letter to her – in Act 1, Scene 5) as â€Å"my dearest partner of greatness†. Also in this scene, he addressed her as â€Å"My dearest love†. On the other hand, this did not prevent him from acting in the opposite way in battle as a cruel warrior. Once the witches had prophesised that Macbeth would be king â€Å"hereafter† (Act 1, Scene 3), Macbeth seemed to have been drawn in by this advance information i.e. he started, and seemed â€Å"to fear†. This reaction indicates that he was a very gullible being, who tended to believe what was said. Then again, if one were informed that one was to be king, then one might believe it, as it is a desirable privilege. This represents honest ambition, at this stage, without seeming to involve any nefarious actions on Macbeth’s part. Also, the mental images that would come into one’s mind could heighten one’s level of gullibility and boost one’s self-esteem. This scene also tells us, as readers, that Banquo, on the other hand, is not so easily convinced, and to us, this demonstrates a stronger character. Banquo obviously doubted the witches’ predictions, as he questioned Macbeth’s response by asking, â€Å"why do you start, and seem t o fear†. Another important part of the story, which points out a particular frailty of Macbeth’s, occurs later on in Act 1, Scene 3, when Macbeth lied to Banquo. He pretended to Banquo that his â€Å"dull brain was wrought† to divert Banquo’s thoughts about him, by being devious – as one might expect from a villain – so that Banquo would no longer believe that Macbeth trusted the witches’ predictions. Even after finding that the first prediction of the witches was true, Banquo warned him, basically, that even if the witches told him some little truth, later they would deceive him. Another example of Macbeth’s deceit against Banquo comes in Act 2, Scene 1, when Macbeth denied that any thoughts of the witches were in his mind: â€Å"I think not of them†¦Ã¢â‚¬  In the next scene (Act 1, Scene 4), irony and duplicity emerge. This happens because Shakespeare emphasised Duncan’s respect for Macbeth, with Duncan saying such things as â€Å"worthiest† whilst addressing Macbeth. However, as Macbeth later on in the story kills Duncan, this belies his true political intention of power seeking, and perhaps not solely of his own volition, but driven by his wife’s ambitious self-interest. Macbeth does not seem to be a villain, but rather a considerate man who actually has redeeming qualities. When he arrived home a few days after the battle, he advised his wife, Lady Macbeth, of the King’s arrangements to sleep at their castle that night. Shakespeare revealed her to be a ruthless schemer, who cared about nobody when it came to power. This is proved when she decided that they had to kill Duncan, to fulfil the witches’ prophecies. Later on (in Act 1, Scene 7), Macbeth is seen in the soliloquy, expressing his doubts to the reader. As readers, we see his good side when he’s explaining that he’s not a vagabond, by expressing his hesitancy to kill Duncan. One of his comments is, â€Å"First, I am his kinsman and his subject†¦then, as his host†¦Ã¢â‚¬  What Macbeth is actually saying here is that he is a trusted member of Duncan’s kin and army, and also that Duncan is a guest protected by the law of hospitality. This would make t he murder even more unholy, as it’s a form of criminal intent against the unsuspecting king prior to the deed. So here Macbeth is seen actively contemplating murder, on the one hand, while on the other, his conscience tries to inhibit the act. Herein afterwards in this scene, Lady Macbeth uses her persuasive and guileful tactics on Macbeth to change his mind, and agree to go ahead with the murder. Her methods are simple and psychological, since they criticise Macbeth’s manhood. She manages to ridicule his conscience under her scornful attack by using phrases such as â€Å"Was the hope drunk?† and â€Å"Art thou afeard†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Thus, by so doing, she labels him a coward, and coerces him into changing his mind under her pursuing peer pressure and her curses. She then makes things even worse, by threatening to commit the act herself! Now this, to Macbeth – a man – really taunts him into an agreement against his better judgement. In such a fashion, women succeed. After Macbeth murdered Duncan, he went downstairs and started talking to Lady Macbeth. He told her how he regretted his evil deed. He was a man of action, but was confused when he lost his sense of right and wrong. He carried on with the murder, but displayed guilt, remorse and fearful superstition afterwards. An example of his guilt came after he killed Duncan (in Act 2, Scene 2), whilst he was informing Lady Macbeth of his doings and what he heard from Malcolm and Donalbain’s room, next door. He told her what they said during their sleep. His guilt was then admitted: â€Å"But wherefore could not I pronounce ‘Amen’? I had most need of blessing, and ‘Amen’ stuck in my throat.† Evidence that he was full of remorse, came right at the end of Act 2, Scene 2, â€Å"Wake Duncan with thy knocking: I would thou couldst!† This sentence clearly indicated his regretful state of mind, and the quote supports the fact that Macbeth did have some redeeming qualities of conscience. He even has a trace of fearful superstition in his head, as he † heard a voice cry, ‘Sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep,’ – the innocent sleep.† These mental images inside his own mind blatantly reflect that he is aware and stricken by them. Therefore, he is still able to discern between good and evil even after the foul deed has been accomplished. When Macbeth kills the two servant guards â€Å"in anger†, he is seen to extend his evil deed and perhaps this can be considered as the point where he has become the â€Å"complete villain†. In spite of a nagging conscience in killing Duncan, he had to continue his evil ways to silence the two innocent guards: â€Å"O, yet I do repent me of my fury, that I did kill them.† Here is a further example of his commitment to evil in spite of conscience and so, his tendency towards malfeasance does not abate. In addition to this unfolding character change, he also deceives all others, including Duncan’s two sons. He deceitfully assumes the role of the angry Thane, driven to lash out at the two guards, who, on the face of it, had killed the king. Once more, he shows duplicity in ‘confessing’ another lie, â€Å"Who can be wise, amazed, temperate and furious, loyal and neutral, in a moment? No man: the expedition of my violent love outran the pauser reason.† So, his conscience is now being overtaken by his evil actions and reflects his weakness in becoming a pawn by acting out the will of his accomplice, Lady Macbeth, and exposes a diminishing personal integrity to the reader. This change in Macbeth develops and is reflected in his fore-planning soliloquy in Act 3, Scene 1, while awaiting the two murderers to enter. He exposes his own discontent, even after becoming King. Fearing Banquo and his son’s succession, any refraining influence of conscience is now deliberately put aside, â€Å"To be thus is nothing†¦our fears in Banquo stick deep†¦to make them kings, the seed of Banquo kings! Rather than so, come, fate, into the list, and champion me to the utterance!† By the end of this scene, Macbeth’s complete change of character is painfully evident, showing his complete absence of concern. At this stage, gone are any troubled thoughts so evident when either considering or enacting Duncan’s demise. Instead, an evil commitment is observed in his cruel remark as Act 3, Scene 1 closes: â€Å"It is concluded: Banquo, thy soul’s flight, if it find heaven, must find it out tonight.† Macbeth’s mind, irrespective of conscience, is now refocused on action – to rid himself of his last nagging fear of Banquo’s lineage superseding his own. It can be argued that from this point, Macbeth has indeed ‘crossed the Rubicon’. He was totally committed to whatever evil deeds the future might hold. He demonstrates this change of mind when replying to his wife’s exhortation in Act 3, Scene 2, â€Å"what’s done is done.† Also, his attitude and mental state is highlighted as he says: â€Å"But let the frame of things disjoint, both the worlds suffer, ere we will eat our meal in fear, and sleep in the affliction of these terrible dreams that shake us nightly.† Again, at the end of this scene, when Macbeth has planned Banquo’s murder, he keeps his wife in the dark about this: â€Å"So, pr’ythee, go with me.† During the banquet, in Act 3, Scene 4, Macbeth is advised of Banquo’s death and Fleance’s escape. This unsettles Macbeth. He feels trapped, â€Å"but now I am cabined, cribbed, confined, bound in to saucy doubts and fears.† Yet he successfully puts on a face for his guests, until Banquo’s ghost appears. Consternation rules and suspicion reigns. Macbeth’s superstitious fear and guilt return, yet his courage does not fail him when the apparition appears: â€Å"Thou canst not say I did it. Never shake thy gory locks at me.† Also When Lady Macbeth asked him, â€Å"Are you a man?†, Macbeth replies, â€Å"Ay, and a bold one, that dare look on that which might appal the devil.† The appearance of Banquo’s ghost sitting in Macbeth’s place signifies that Banquo’s descendants would replace Macbeth’s. Macbeth decides his delusions are a beginner’s fear and lack of experience: â€Å"My strange and self-abu se is the initiate fear, that wants hard use: we are yet but young in deed.† In doing so, he ignores the horrific effect of his outrageous crimes in his country, and reveals the depth of his treason and treachery. It comes as no surprise to discover that Macbeth has a covert intelligence network, â€Å"There’s not a one of them, but in his house I keep a servant fee’d.† So Macbeth’s deviousness and villainous activity persists to support his grip on power over Scotland. Therefore, Macduff, in joining Duncan’s son Malcolm in England, realises only force of arms will recover the situation, since: â€Å"Each new morn, new widows howl, new orphans cry, new sorrows strike heaven on the face, that it resounds as if it felt with Scotland, and yelled out like syllable of dolour.† When Macbeth went to consult the Witches after the Coronation feast, it was because he again followed his own evil self-interest: â€Å"More shall they speak; for now I am bent to know, by the worst means, the worst. For mine own good all causes shall give way†¦Ã¢â‚¬  This pursuit of self is matched by their own evil intention, to ‘Set him up’; â€Å"As, by the strength of their illusion, shall draw him on to his confusion. He shall spurn fate†¦and you all know, security is mortals’ chiefest enemy.† Upon meeting the witches again, Macbeth’s chagrined reaction to the apparitions of the eight Kings – with Banquo’s ghost following – is to curse the event and experience a resurrected fear; † Let this pernicious hour stand aye accursed in the calendar!†, and â€Å"†¦damned all those that trust them!† After this, Macbeth decides to act independently by matching thought to action, and eliminating Macduff’s lands and family. â€Å"This deed I’ll do before this purpose cool†. By doing so, Macbeth has now sunk to his lowest ebb in cowardly treachery against innocent victims. His motive is to punish Macduff for defying him, and lure him back to Scotland as a result of Macduff’s anger. There, Macduff would clearly be in his grasp. Macbeth would then be able to kill him. However, if one compares Macbeth’s despicable characteristics as a king only one quality emerges where it can be safely said he is comparable. This is his courage. In spite of his villainy, his physical courage in facing unpalatable situations of all kinds is never in question. Alas, who would connect him with the qualities that Malcolm (in Act 4, Scene 3) enumerates? – â€Å"†¦justice, verity, temperance, stableness, Bounty, Perseverance, mercy, lowliness, devotion, patience, courage, fortitude†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Macbeth came to realise his own corrupt ways when he faces Macduff on the battlefield, â€Å"Of all men else have I avoided thee: But get thee back, my soul is too much charged with blood of thine already.† Macbeth reacts with Lady Macbeth’s death Stoically but without any true compassion. â€Å"She should have died hereafter†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Towards the end of the play, Macbeth has come to accept his defeat, yet on a personal level he still superstitiously clings to the three hags words, that no man born of woman can harm him, â€Å"I bear a charmed life.† Even after Macduff quotes the details of his caesarean birth, Macbeth is still courageously defiant: † I will not yield†¦and damned be him that first cries ‘Hold, enough’.† Macduff calls to Macbeth, â€Å"yield ye, coward,† and â€Å"We’ll have thee, as our rarer monsters are, painted upon a pole, and underwrit, ‘Here may you see the tyrant’.† Here even Macduff labels Macbeth as a complete and utter ‘tyrant’! In the end, Macbeth’s only virtuous quality proved to be his courage and it was this undaunted approach to all danger in life, which somehow endeared him in death, in spite of his evil ways, as a black hero. However, his gradual change, after showing this virtue at the start of the play, does point to the truth of the adage, â€Å"power tends to corrupt and absolute power tends to corrupt absolutely†.
